The Dreaming Technique is rather simple, yet can have a profound impact on your job search. As you dream about your potential new job, dream also about your potential dream employer(s). If you have a specific company in mind, communicate your "dream" to your potential employer. It is not enough just to dream—your dream will always be just a dream until you tell someone about it. Then it has the possibility of becoming a reality.
The key to this technique is to use the term "dream employer" when you are talking to the company. If it is your dream to work there, say so. A typical script might be:
"I just want to let you know that your company is truly my dream employer. In all my research, in all my inquiries, I have found no company I would rather work for than yours. I realize that you may not have a need for someone with my skills at this exact moment in time. But someday, some way, I hope to have an opportunity to work for your company. I am willing to do whatever I can to help make that dream come true. Will you help me in reaching my dream by letting me know when an opening is available for someone such as myself?"
People change, companies change, and one day (possibly in the not-too-distant future) you may find yourself interviewing for that dream job. Possibly sooner than you think. It makes a significant difference to the employer to know that you see them as more than just a job. This type of information will set you apart from the rest of the crowd when the employer considers adding new staff.
